Counterfeit notes

Tiverton businesses - We're asking all business owners and staff to remain vigilant, particularly when accepting £20 and £50 notes.

Things to check:

The raised print on the words on Bank of England

The metabolic hologram that changes between the value and a pound symbol when tilted

The see-through window with a detailed metallic image

The note should feel firm and slightly waxy, not paper-like

Check the serial numbers - multiple notes with identical numbers are a red flag

Genuine polymer notes issued by the Bank of England contain clear security features that are difficult to replicate.

If you suspect a counterfeit note:

Do not return it to the person if safe to retain

Handle it as little as possible

Note a description of the individual (if appropriate)

Contact police via 101 or report online

If a crime is in progress, always call 999.
