Dear member, We have been made aware that there may be cold callers offering gardening/maintenance/roofing work etc in the Tiverton area. How to protect yourself from Rogue Traders: 1- Be cautious of unexpected callers Rogue traders often cold-call, offering to do work such as roofing, driveways, gardening or repairs.Do not agree to work on the spot- legitimate traders do not pressure you.2- Always check ID Ask for identification and verify the company by calling the number you find independently (not one they provide).- If in doubt, don't let them inside your home.3- Never pay upfront Reputable traders do not ask for cash upfront or large deposits before starting work.4- Do not be rushed Rogue traders use tactics like “your roof is dangerous” or “we're working in the area today”.Take your time- pressure equals a red flag.5- Get multiple quotes Shop around and compare prices. if a quote seems too good to be true, it usually is.6- Use trusted, approved traders Use: Trading Standard approved schemes (e.g., Buy with confidence)Checkatrade, Which? Trusted Traders or local council recommended traders. 7- Keep your door secure Use a door chain or speak through a window. You are not obliged to answer your door.8- Protect vulnerable neighbours Keep an eye out for elderly or isolated neighbours who may be targeted.Report any suspicious activity.9- Know your cancellation rights If you sign a contract at home, you often have a 14- day cooling off period by law.10- Report suspicious behaviour If you feel unsafe or believe a crime is happening, call 999.To report rogue traders or suspicious callers after the fact, call 101.For any further information or advice, please visit the Devon and Cornwall Police website or Action Fraud website.
